One o'clock P.M.
Tho Chairman in moving the adop- tion of the Report and Balauco shoot at the half-yearly mooting of the Hotel Company, held yesterday, ro- ferred in congratulatory terms to the present favorable position of the Com- pany's affairs, alluding particularly to tho fact, that for the first time since the formation of the concern, the shares were quoted at a premium. Wo soriously incline to the belief that the improved position of the Ilotel-Com- pany's stock is solely owing to an iden which has been spread abroad relative to the desire of certain Chinese spoc- ulators to purchase the property. There has been so many important -transactions in property within tho Colony during the past few months, (and a good number of bogus sales too, which have been advertised as legitimate transfors), that the value of the Hotel bas no doubt beon greatly enhanced; but it may be fairly asked, if it is probable that this property craze is likely to becorno a pormanent institution! Truly enough Hotel shures have been made the madium of a good deal of speculation; but their fluctuations in the market have been anything but a sure indien. tion of permanent stability. That tho property will eventually be sold we cannot doubt, and when some bond fide offer has been made, the shareholders will be in a better position to jugo. of their actual prospects, than they pos- sibly can be at present, with nothing to guide them but a quotation which is not reliable, and an announcement that the lessees are making money out of their contract, Hotel shares are on offer at $110 per share, without finding purchasers, and if the tone of the market is to be taken as an indication, they will go a good deal lower before they load to substantial business of a legitimate character. With the excep- tion of a few moro sales of Banks at 116 cash, and time transfers for the ond of December at 124, the Stock Exchange was drawn a blank yostor- day. Docks were offered at 50 without leading to business, and we did not hear of a single enquiry referring to any other stock. Our detailed list of quo- tations therefore remains unaltered, as nothing has been done up to the time of going to press.

Hongkong Hotel Company,
Limited.
The ordinary half-yearly mooting of the sharoliolders in the above Company was held at the Hotel yesterday after- noon. There were prosent Messrs. E. R. Belilios (Chairman), W. Reiners, Hon. P. Ryrie, II. Hoppius, (Directors), A. E. Vaucher, E. Georg, J. II. Cox, De, Gomes, G. Reynell, H. Smith, D. McCulloch, A. A. Remedios, II. Kühl- mann, J. Komedios, F. C. Dittinor, and L. Hauschild (Secretary).
The Chairman said:--Goutlemon- You have doubtless studied our report and accounts for the past half-year. You will now consequently allow me to tako them as read. The report has touched on all the important points connected with this institution; there," is, therofore, vory little for me to add. Howover, I have to congratulate you on the prosperous condition of your investment. Since the formation of this Company, this is the first meeting wherent wo may with pride say that our shares stand at a premium in the stock list of Hongkong. Never in the history of this Company have shares been even at par. From the records in the office it appears that the original allottees failed to take up 142 shares of the stock of the Company. Whether this was done purposely with the view' of getting rid of their liability, owing to the then gloomy futuro of the vonture, or because the means of these gentle- men were limited at the time, I cannot say, but the fact remains that when we took charge of the affairs of the Ilotel, we found them standing as an asset in the accounts. At a recent meeting of the directors it was discussed as to whether or not they should be issued. You are aware wo are paying at presont to the shareholders à dividend of five per cont on the paid-up capital and the money on loan costs us 7 per cent.; considering that by launching those shares in the market the gain to the proprietory would have been ouly 24 per cont per annum, and likewise bear- ing in mind the offers that are being made by Chinese to purchase the pro- perty, we did not deem it advisable in the interests of the existing share- holders to allot them. I dare say, gentlemen, you will ratify our action in this particular and will give us dis. cretionary power to deal with the shares as we think fit at any future period on your account.
