not to do. Our experience in renovat, ing wooden steamers has not been favourable. It was therefore deemed advisable to get rid of her at a public sale. Unfortunately for ourselves, the restrictions imposed on the purchaser under the subsisting agreement with the late opposition were so many that no reasonable bid was obtained for her at, the auction. The Portan, the White Cloud, and the Kinkiang have all been recently dockod, examined, and passed by the Government Surveyor. The two latter are wooden steamers. The White Cloud, built of pine, commenced run- ning in September, 1875. The Kiu- kiang, hull iron bound, was thoroughly renovated with hard wood in the mid- die of 1879. Surveyors tell us that vessels built of pine and vessels bailt of hard wood are generally good for eleven and thirteen years respectively. There are at this moment reports on the table from men competent to judge about these matters, an examination of which will convince you that these vessels have many a long year of life in them yet: The Spark is an oll steamer, but she is doing her work efficiently. This vessel stands at such a small figure in the Company's books, that if she were to be expunged to- morrow from the face of these waters no great loss would be incurred by the proprietory. Under the circumstances it is in contemplation to replace our wooden vessels as they die out by iron steamers. This can be accomplished with our reserved net carnings, but to place ourselves in a strong position it will be prudent to curtail our future dividends. Gentlemen, if this be de- termined upon I hope you will not be lisappointed. A new steel steamer is being constructed on our account on the Clyde. All the newest appliances, improvements, and appointments in shipbuilding are being availed of to make her a success.

When safely arrived here she will be the best steaner-I love good authority for saying so and a great acquisition in those waters. I have no further re- marks to make, gentlemen, but will be glad to answer questions. Thoro being no questions, I propose the report be adopted and the accounts passed;

Mr. Smith scoonded. Carried unanimously.

It was proposed by Mr. Melver, and seconded by Mr. McCulloch, that the election by the directors of Mr. W. Beiners and Hou, F. B. Johnson to scats on the board, in place of Mr. A Andre and Mr. W. Keswick, who have left the colony, be confirmed. Carried.

On the motion of Mr. Reiners, seconded by Mr. Vaucher, Messrs. H. Smith and L. Hauschild were re-elected auditors. 4

The Chairman said that concluded the business, and that the dividends would be paid on and after Saturday.

Mr. Morgan said that before propos, ing a vote of thanks to the Chairman and directors he wished to make a few remarks. As a shareholder he would like the directors to take into 'serious consideration the suggestion to reduce the dividonds for the future. from twelve to ten per cent, simply for the purpose of raising the reserve fund to enable them to get now steam-

Listen to his fire a minato Tho flanies burst out of a common kitchen stove, and, rejoicing in their freedom, poured with a wild roar of laughter into the adjoining room used by Mr. O'Moara as a tailor's shop. Up the side of the doorway they elimbed, shrieking with a fiendish de- light toward the reading rooms of Mr. Amos Thompson, when they were checked by the gush of the engines, and dropped affrighted through the floor into Antonelli's barber establish- ment below. The respect in which deceased was held was testified by the energy dis- played by the mourners in their efforts to secure front seats. Long before the hour appointed the house was crowded, and hundreds were turned away. At the conclusion of the ceremony the preacher announced that all who desired to glance at the features of the dead party would please step forward, and the scene that followed beggars descrip- tion, while the organ played a sad aria from Offenbach'sratorio of Solomon.' What does that mean?" "You just let it alone," defied the funeral reporter. How's this? For hours the hissing water and the battling flames wrestled for mastery. At length the wearied mass of furious fire, with one expiring effort, reached its blazing arms toward the frowning zenith, and with a shud der of despair sunk before its heredi- tary foo. Loss £20.
