monts of the regiment - since their last appearated in the great national camp aro as follows:-Left Alforshot for Dover in 185, went to Licorick in 1867, and Dahlin in 1868. After abay ́ing förð weeks in the Irish capital the regiment was ordered to Gibraltar whore they stayed somewhore about four years, passing on to Malta in 1872. From Malta the regiment fol- lowed its predecessor and arrived in the Straits Settlements, with its houd quarters at Singapore, at the time when the Malay little trouble was on hand, and a distribution of the corps took place, the head quartors and two com- panies boing stationed at Penang, one company at Qualla Kauza, one company at Banda Bharq, and the re- mainder in Singapuro. Representa- tions woro made to Horse Guards both by telogram, and by letter, respecting the alleged unhealthiness of the 28th, thon in this garrison, which again caused the regiment to move and they found themselves in Hongkong in 1878. In 1879 they again returned to the Straits Sottlements, and event. ually found their way to Glasgow in 1870, aftor thirteen years continuous foreign service. On the 2nd June, Major-General Sir IT. W. Havelock- Allan, Bart., inspected the regiment and expressed himself highly satisfied with the gonoral appearance and steadiness of the mon under armus.

The following evidence was heard:--- William Dudley Wodsworth deposod, -am staff-surgeon of H.M.S. Lapwing. The body which the Jurors have just viewol is the body of Commander Scott. I have examined it. A gun- shot wound penetrating the brain was the cause of death. I heard what I took to be a shot fired at about 8.50 a. m. to-day, while I was walking on deck. The captain's servant rushed on dock mid said the captain had shot himself. I wont below to his cabin and found the body lying in the sleep- ing cabin, with the feet towards the drawers, and the head on the sill of the door. Life was not extinct. He died in about an hour, He was unconscious the whole time. He was partially dressed. The aperture of entry is situated on the right temple, about midway between the angle of the cyc and the lobe of the car. From the direction of the wound and the matter isssuing from the wound, the ballet must have ponetrated the rain. There were too wounds. The second was the aperture of exit. The ball traversed the brain, The ball was found on the floor of the sleeping cabin. The ball is a pistol ballet apparently, weighing two dra- chms. I have secu a pistol from which it is supposed to have been fired. The captain's servant found the pistol be- neath the body. (Pistol and ballet produced). The doctor of the Foxhound and Dr. Little also saw him before he died. Nothing could bo done for him. He has lately been suffering from diarrhoea and derangement of the bow-Pale els. I asked him if he wanted auy- thing before going to Court. He re- plied "No;" and said that he felt bot- ter this morning, but that he would liko a glass of port in a flash to take with him. This conversation was in I left him there. This his" cabin. would be about ten minutes before I heard the shot. IIe seemed rather dis- tressed and mentally depressed. By the Coroner-I have no doubt the wound was self-inflicted. I cannot say whether he was sitting, or stand- ing, or lying down when the shot was fired. I should think he foll, because there is a wound on the chin as if he had struck against something in fall- ing. He had no coat on and no hat, when I spoke to him in his cabin. Ho&Co. was similarly dressed when I next. saw him. Ho had breakfast.
The extraordinary success which has attended the Hongkong and Shang- hai Banking Corporation's attempt to float the Chinese Imperial Silver Loan, is the very best proof which could be adduced to show the ad- mirable manner in which the affairs of that institution are directed. With- out denying that the Court of Directors are entitled to great praise for their efforts, general opinion would seem to indicate that the Chief Manager, Mr. T. Jackson, Mr. Ewen Cameron, Manager, in Shang- hai, and Mr. Henry Smith, the Chief Accountant, are the men who have brought this Loan to a successful issue; and the Shareholders are to be congratulated on having business men of such tried experience, and remarkable foresight, at the head of affairs. Considering that the tenders accepted average within a fraction of 33 per cent premium on the amount of the Loan, which, roughly speaking means a clear profit of $210,000, without including the profits ou ex- changes, &e, it is hardly to be won- dered at that Bank shares are quoted

Indicating the permanent stab- ility of the stock, clever men are found speculating on time bargains, at the high rate of 123 for December, and even a higher price than this would appear to be justified by the prospects of the Bank.
