INTELLIGENCE.

Saturday, July 23rd, 1881.

One o'clock P.M.

Transactions in shares are still of an unimportant character, and it seems as if very little will be done until the end of the prosent month. Sugars were inquired after yesterday after- noon, and a few sales booked at 170, but this spurt was not maintained for any length of time, and to-day: buyers could be accommodated with any quantity of shares at that quotation. Until something de- finite is known as to the intentions and prospects of the reputed rival concern, China Sugar Stock is almost certain to hold a rather unsatisfac- tory position in the market, although we really cannot make out why it should be so, as the Company is reported to have had a splendid half year, and to have plenty of paying work on hand at the present time. Besides, any new opposition cannot affect prejudicially the interests of this Company for a considerable time to come. Banks are on offer at 109, cash and for the end of the month, but nothing has been done; and Docks hold the same position they

Hotels occupied yesterday. rather weaker, and although we allow our quotation 115 to remain unaltered, we think a few shares could be procured at a reduced rate. China Fires are on offer at 300, and buyers would deal at 295, so their status is practically the same as yesterday. We append as usual a complete list of quotations corrected up to to-day at one o'clock.

SUPREME COURT.

IN CRIMINAL SESSIONS.

Their Lordships, the Acting Chief Justice, the Hon. F. Snowden, and the Acting using Julro, Mr. J. Russell, sat in Criminal Sessions yesterday for the purpose of passing sentence on the prisoners convicted on Monday last.

BEFORE MR. SNOWDEN, Fang Afak and Lo Lun Po two light houso men employed in the Harbour Masters departinont, convicted of an opium robbery from men who were believed to be smugglers, were each sentenced to twelve cilender months imprisonment with hard labour.

They each protested their innocence, the first prisoner stating that he bad been in this colony for over twenty years and had never been guilty of any crime, great, or small, and had been in the lighthouse service for six or seven years, and it was well known to the Government that he was an honest inan.

Mr. MacEnen, Assistant Harbour Master, gave the prisoners a good

character, and said he had confidence in them. On being removed from the dock both men protested loudly against being punished for a felony which may have been committed, but with which they had had no connection.

BEFORE MR. RUSSELL. Pang Aching was sentenced to five years penal servitudo for larceny in a dwelling house.

His Lordship designated the case as a very serious one. Burglary had been clearly established, and if it had not been for the vigilance of a boy employed in the house opposite the one in which the larceny had been committed, the prisoner would pro- bably have escaped with the booty he had collected together, amounting to about $50 worth. Prisoner had been twice previously convicted and bad shown himself to be a very bad char-

acter.

Chun Kwai Choi, a married woman, was next placed in the dock and was sentenced to three yours ponal sorvitude for wounding with intent to do grievous body harm.

On being asked what she had to say why the sentence of the court should not be passed upon her, she took the full advantage of the privilege and entered into a long, rambling, mean- ingless story which lasted nearly half it being an hour, the gist of that she was a virtuous woinan, and although separated from her husband hor heart was filled with wifely and motherly affection, and although men were wicked enough to stab, women never could do so. She said a woman was just like a dog, it would neither bark nor bito if is wore not teased. She had boon sorely grieved at her heart by the attempt to kidnap her. If she were sont to gaol it would be of no use for her husband to toil and sond hor money, and if he saved money and came here and found her in gaol, he would buy another wife. How could her heart stand this. Thoir Lordships were both married men and would un- dorstand matters.

His Lordship said it was a fortunate

thing for her that the man she had stabbed was still alive. It was

feared at one time that he could not cocover, the doctors had given him up. Had he died, she would probably have been found guilty of murder. Hor story about an attempt on her person was not believod.

Chan Ayan was next sentenced to two years imprisonment with hard labour for larceny of a pair of boots.

When asked what be had to say, ho informed his Lordship that he had not- hing particular to remark, but simply begged for. mercy, This closed the sessions for July.

The Consul to Tientsin...

The nomination of Sonator James C. Zuck of Santa Clara county, to be United States Consul at Tientsin, China, having been confirmed, he yesterday (Juno 6th) signed his bond and for- warded it to Washington. The law requiros that a Consul shall leave for his post of duty within thirty days after filing his boud. Mr. Zuck will accordingly sail for China with his family about the the first of next month. Tientsin is situated seventy miles from Peking, the capital of the Chinese Empire, of which city it is the port, and twenty-five miles from the ocean. The population is variously estimated at from 400,000 to 900,000. The Ba- ropean enlony is located about two

Was

miles from the town proper, and numb. ers about 300 persons, about one-third of whom are ladies. Diplomatically considered, Tientsin is the most in- portant consulship in China. The salary is $3,500 per annum, with fees which are variable in amount. Thie

Mr. Zuck appointment of made principally through the me- dium of Sonator Millor. The new Consul has not yet resigned the State Senatorship, but of course will do so before sailing for China. In this iu stance virtue has its roward, Mr. Zuck is both a lawyer and a baiker, above all, a man of honor. His logis- lative career showed that he was own- ed by no corporation, but stood im- movably on the side of the people. He comes up to the Jeffersonian stand- ard for a public official. He is honest, ho is capable. Tho credit of California and of the United States will be woll maintained abroad by Consul Zack.- San Francisco Cull.
