THE

ROMAN CATHOLIC CATHEDRAL, To the Editor of the

exort bis well known zoal to remedy the inconveniencos so justly complain- ed of.

Yours faithfully,

A LADY.

[It would be useless to anggest any improvement for the present building. The inconveniences complained of by our correspondent will be of short dura- tion, as we learn that Bishop Raimon- di has gone home for plans, etc., for a new cathedral which will soon be erect ed in one of the best parts of the town.

WINNING HIM BACK.-One of the travellers for a new fresh dry-goods house recently arrived in a town in the interior of the state to find that one of bis bost customers was about to trans- fer his custom to a Boston house. "Didn't we always do well by you?' asked the New Yorker, at he sat down for an explanation. "Yes, I believe so." "Didn't we ship goods promptly?" "Yea." "And did we ever press you in a pinch ?" "No." "Did you got lower prices at the Boston house?" "No, I can't say as I did." "They can't understand why you should leave our house all of a sudden after buying of as for several years." "I know that some explanation is due, and I will make one,' ," replied the merchant. "You know that I attend church ?” Yes, and so do I." "Do you? I didn't know that. I am looked upon as a Christain." "So am I. I've got the date of my baptism right here in this book!" "Is that so! Well, our church is in need of repairs. We were talking it over the other day when the Boston dromer was in here, and he at once subscribed 10 dol” “Ten dollars!.. why, that's only two kegs of nails! Put me down for 30 dol. cash, a new silk hat for every season, and suit of clothes for the minister."

"Do you really mean it?" "Of course I do, and if that two-cent Christian from Boston dares to sign another five I'll send you down a 600 dol. church organ and pay a man 500 dol. per year to play it. We are a house which never makes a great display of gospel hymns and religious tracts, but when a Boston drummer bluffs we show our religious hands, and rake in the pot evory.timo." The merchant will still continue to deal with the New York house-Wall- street News.

A RE-DISTRIBUTION of seats in the House of Commons has evidently taken place without the knowledge and sanction of Parliament. We find that in a breach of promise case heard in the Queen's Bench Division on Thursday, the defend- aut, a tobacconist, signed himself in most of his letters to the fair plaintiff

as

"M. P. for Westminster-bridge- road." We have diligently searched through "Dodd," but failed to find this seat.-Sportsman.

CAPITAL SUBSCRIVED.... 15,000,000 Francs. CAPITAL PAID-UP... 3,750,000 Franes.

The Undersigned, having been ap pointed AGENTS of the above Company, are prepared to GRANT POLICIES on MARINE RISKS to all parts of

"Hongkong Telegraph.” SIR,The Roman Catholic Cathe- dral, with the exception of its facade, and the pillars outside, which I imagine are supposed to produce a classical effect, but support nothing, has actually no claims to architectural beauty; and SOCIETÉ ANONYME D'ASSURANCE if wo come to the question of comfort, the old building is opdu to even less recommendation. The windows aro low and small, and seem to be so ar- ranged as to admit a maximum of son with a minimum of air, so that while the hats of the ladies may at times be scen fulgent with the fierce rays of a midsummer sun, all the appliances of fidgutty fans scarcely secure sufficient air-to-breathe with comfort. Yester- day the congregation had another ill. ustration of an imperfection connected with the Cathedral novor before suspect. ed, namely, that any severe rain makes such a clatter upon the roof that it is utterly impossible to hear a single word from the pulpit. The pows are so fow that any lady who happens to arrivo a little late has to sit in the pass- ago, exposing her dress to be trodden on by those who pass by.

I fail to see that the inconveniences. complained of are in any way beyond the power of romedy, and trust the Very Rev. Father Burghignoli will:
