In acknowledging the receipt of your despatch and in convey-- ing to you my approval of the leave of absence which you have granted to Sir John Smalo, (which will exhaust the full amount of leave to which he is entitled including the six beneficial months), I have to express to you the satisfaction with which I have received the testimony bone by yourself and the members of the Colonial Bar to the manner in which Sir John Smale has discharged the duties of the high office from which he is now retiring.

SIMLA, 20th Jane.

It is reported from Kandalar that of the 11th a force from Girishk con sisting of two regiments cavalry, one infantry, and two guns met with aud were attacked by levies under Mahomed Hasan Khan and Abdulla Khan at Karegi Sifed.
