aged between two and five and is used as a training ground for nursery workers, Pre-service training such as the one-year full-time Certificate Course in Work with Pre-school Children and the one-year full-time Course for Youth Workers are also provided. These and other training programmes run at the Centre were attended by 725 people during the

year.

24. Following the recommendations of Dame Eileen YOUNG- HUSBAND, D.B.E., J.P. in her report entitled 'Employment and Train- ing for Social Work in Hong Kong', proposals were made to the Government by the Advisory Committee on Social Work Training that an Institute for Social Work Training be established under the administrative aegis of the Department, to provide pre-service training below university level, mainly in the form of a 2-year full-time course. These proposals met with the approval of Government, and the Academic Board of the Institute, which was formed in January 1973 and comprises representatives of various bodies active in social work training, is now actively engaged in the preparation work for the In- stitute which is expected to be in operation in the autumn of 1973.

THE UNIVERSITIES

25. Enrolment of social work students at the two universities dur- ing the academic year 1972-73 was 111. A total of 67 students com- pleted their social work training at the two universities in May 1972.

26. Fieldwork training is an important part of formal social work training. In this respect the Department continued to provide field- work training and professional supervision for 25 social work students altogether (15 students at any one time) from the two universities. In the summer of 1972 the Department co-ordinated a work programme to enable 115 students to work in various offices, community centres, child care and correctional institutions.

27. Government continued to provide bursaries which amounted to $141,200 for 62 social work students at the two universities.

IN-SERVICE TRAINING

28. Since 1962, the Department has been organizing in-service social welfare training courses for the staff employed in voluntary agencies as well as Government Departments. This includes staff
