29. Government continued to provide bursaries which amounted to $163,110 for 76 social work students at the two universities. Other scholarships are provided by the Hongkong & Shanghai Banking Corporation and the American Women's Association.
IN-SERVICE TRAINING
30. Since 1962, the Department has been organizing in-service social welfare training courses for the staff employed in voluntary agencies as well as Government Departments. This includes staff engaged in day care and residential work with children, family welfare services, proba- tion and aftercare services for young people and rehabilitation of the disabled. The basic courses generally last for five months (on a week per month basis). Refresher courses are comparatively shorter. Adminis- trators and supervisors from voluntary agencies continued to give their support in the joint planning and evaluation of the programmes and in providing speakers on special subjects.
TRAINING FOR DEPARTMENTAL STAFF
31. During the year six orientation courses were provided for 139 newly employed staff. These courses are of one week's duration and are intended to familiarize the staff with the work of the Department. Two special courses were also provided for 50 staff members responsible for implementing the revised public assistance scheme.
32. The Department continued to provide opportunities for a number of selected officers to pursue formal professional training both locally and overseas. During the year, seven officers were sent to the United Kingdom and Canada for social work training. The University of Hong Kong accepted four officers for training in Social Work. 15 officers who went on study leave in the previous year returned to work in the Department.
ADVISORY COMMITTEE ON SOCIAL WORK TRAINING
33. The composition and current terms of reference of the Advisory Committee for Social Work Training are set out at Appendix 2. During a very active year with 10 full committee meetings and numerous sub-committees, detailed consideration was given to proposals for training social workers outside the universities and to strengthening and updating the Committee's membership and functions.
