workers and nursery superintendents attended three refresher courses. Fourteen senior workers from the Boys' and Girls' Clubs Association and Community Centres/Social Centres of the department participated in a 4-day seminar on 'Staff Supervision'.
123. To encourage the use of a generic approach in social work practice, the Training Section organized a study programme on 'the use of groups by caseworkers' for 24 senior case workers from various agencies. In addition, a two-day residential institute on 'the use of groups' was attended by 22 casework agency administrators. One train- ing officer initiated two experimental projects by using group approach to help children's institutions in staff development.
124. The Training Section also planned and conducted four orienta- tion courses and two separate series of study sessions for both trained and untrained staff of the Social Welfare Department's district offices as an on-going staff development measure. Training Officers also con- ducted certain experimental projects relating to social work practice. A student summer work programme was initiated in June 1967 and 16 social work students participated.
125. Since 1966, the Training Section has been responsible for two field work units for training of social work students from the two universities. Two Training Officers have been in charge of the two units and two other senior departmental officers have been appointed as supervisors of group work students from the Chinese University of Hong Kong. During the summer of 1967 and in co-operation with the Chinese University of Hong Kong, a two-week workshop on 'The Meaning and Use of Programmes' was organized for the University's seventeen group-work students and the Department's nine club leaders of the community centres.
126. In summary, 125 workers attended the basic courses, 69 attended refresher courses; 68 workers and 46 students attended Orien- tation Courses; 56 workers participated in the Social Welfare Depart- ment Staff Development Programmes; 113 workers participated in various special courses, including the experimental projects. Altogether 39 different voluntary agencies and three government departments partic- ipated in the training programmes.
127. A staff member of the Department has been on a study course in Canada (Institute of Child Study, Toronto University) to prepare for taking up important responsibilities in the proposed demonstration
