COURSES, TRAINING AND CONFERENCES
A. REGULAR COURSES IN HONG KONG
7. The University of Hong Kong conducts a two-year part-time course for a Certificate in Social Studies and a one year post-graduate course leading to a Diploma. A total of fifty five students have successfully completed one or other of these courses since their inception in 1950 and most of them have obtained Government appointments in the Social Welfare Department or as almoners in the Medical Department. In March 1959 there were thirteen students taking the certificate course and five the diploma course. Bursary grants provided by the Hong Kong Government to a total annual value of $15,300 were shared between eight of these eighteen students.
8. Students wishing to qualify for an appointment in the Youth Welfare Section of the Department may take a course consisting of one year of teacher training at the Grantham Training College, followed by eight months' training in social work in the Social Welfare Department. Since 1951 a total of twenty one students have completed this course while fourteen others have completed the second part only in order to qualify for work in Boys' and Girls' Clubs.
B. LOCAL TRAINING DURING THE YEAR
9. The Child Welfare section in conjunction with the Y.W.C.A. organized a five months' course in nursery work which was successfully completed by twenty students in January 1959. In March 1959 the same section of the Department started a six months' course in elementary child care, limited to forty students, for which there were over 200 applicants.
10. At the end of the year arrangements were being made for a six months' in-service training course, covering both the theory and practice of welfare work, which is to start in May 1959.
11. The staff of the Department gave lectures on various aspects of social welfare work on many occasions to members of the staffs of other government departments and of voluntary agencies. Facilities for practical training were also given by the Department to University and post-secondary college students.
12. Six members of the staff completed a six months' part-time course in English Braille and obtained certificates. Other members
