funds. This year the Committee's annual appeal again raised $90,000 to which the Government added a further $90,000, $15,000 more than in the previous year.
129. 1956 was the Centenary of the Missions to Seamen and celebrations included a service in St. John's Cathedral, attended by His Excellency the Governor and a firework display staged by H.M.S. CRANE. The Mission also featured in two wireless programmes broadcast in the Colony. The Mission continued to be very active in its routine work, although at the time of the Suez Canal crisis the amount of shipping using the port decreased considerably. The gymnasium has been extended and there is now a permanent boxing ring which has proved popular with Service personnel. The number of overnight guests during the year was 28,029.
130. The Apostleship of the Sea continued to expand its activities during the year and an increased number of visits were made to sailors on board ships and ashore in hospitals. The St. Nicholas Catholic Club was again used by many sea- farers. Work has begun on the building of the Canton Road Club.
131. The Norwegian Seamen's Mission again had a busy year and 800 visits were made to Norwegian, Swedish Danish and Finnish Ships, most of which stayed for only a day or two in Hong Kong.
132. The Merchant Navy Club had an average monthly attendance of between 600 and 700 and an average of thirty games of football per month were played on the Club's ground. The interior of the club has been completely re-decorated and many minor improvements made.

133. General.
General. The Main function of the Community Development Section is to advise and give every encouragement to the many Kaifong Welfare Associations in the Colony. These associations are in no way official bodies, and it must be emphasized that the Social Welfare Officer's role is purely
