so often meet with the reverse, often with distressing con sequences.

74. During the year the Women's and Girls' Section dealt with 207 cases concerning prostitution, dance-hostesses, bar-girls, etc., referred to it by the Police and by other sections of the department. Some of these girls were helped to change their mode of living pending the finding of suitable employment, sometimes temporary relief in the form of food and clothing was given, whilst most of those under the age of 18 were admitted to Pelletier Hall for reclamation and rehabilitation. There were 43 cases of unmarried mothers and their children, which were assisted either to go through legal marriage ceremonies, or to obtain maintenance for the children.

75. There were 103 cases of adolescent girls in moral danger, or otherwise in need of care and protection. 38 girls were married at the Registry of Marriages.

76. Employment was found for 181 girls who had been under the care of the section. Some were placed in textile mills as apprentices, with board and lodging and a small salary, whilst others found employment as assistants in nurseries. A number of girls who had completed their training at Pelletier Hall obtained work in a factory making shirts with high-speed electric machines, a few found employment as salesgirls or typists, whilst many went into domestic service. The Women's and Girls' Section has also given advice in a number of family disputes and 85 couples were assisted in solving their problems. There were eight prosecutions under the Protection of Women and Juveniles Ordinance (See Appendix VIII). The section received into its care seven victims of indecent assult. It also helped the Registrar of Marriages to make inquiries into the validity of legal guardianship.

77. During the year the small staff of the Women's and Girls' Section conducted 6,377 office interviews, and made 203 home visits. Including after-care work, the five officers of the section carried between them a caseload of 2,034.

78. As a result of promotions, appointments, and study leave several staff changes have taken place within the Probation Section during the year.
