65. The Y.W.C.A. was represented by two delegates at the Asian Women's Conference sponsored by the National Japanese Y.W.C.A. in Tokyo and by four delegates at the International Seminar, sponsored by the World Y.W.C.A. and the national Y.W.C.A. of India in conjunction with UNESCO, and held in New Delhi.

66. The very successful 4th Asian Leaders' conference of the Y.M.C.A.'s under the auspices of the World Alliances of Y.M.C.A.'s was held in Hong Kong in December. The Chinese Y.M.C.A. played hosts to representatives from 12 countries. The theme of the Conference was "Serving Youth in the New Asia".

CHAPTER VII · FAMILY WELFARE

67. There are many voluntary welfare organizations devot- ing much time and effort towards the alleviation of economic distress, and seeking some solution to a family's problems more constructive than the doling out of relief in the form of alms. 68. Family Welfare work can be roughly divided into two main categories:-

(i) immediate assistance aimed at preventing disintegration

through economic disaster;

(ii) specialized social casework to help resolve personal

maladjustments within the family;

69. Among the voluntary bodies working in the field of family welfare particular mention must be made of the Hong Kong Family Welfare Society, which because of its great experience and dependability in the handling of family casework receives a substantial annual grant from Government. The Relief Section of the Social Welfare Office also does work of a similar nature in its six welfare centres in Hong Kong and Kowloon. Home visits are made, people are helped to obtain hawker's. licences, urgent cases are referred for medical attention, and so on. In a small way, the Women's and Girls' Section also does a certain amount of family counselling, and helps married couples to solve their problems.

70. No chapter on family welfare would be complete without recognition of the traditional role played by the Secretariat for
