51. The Mobile Library, a gift from the Hong Kong Junior Chamber of Commerce to the Social Welfare Office, continued to operate in the New Territories and also visited regularly the Tai Hang Tung, Shek Kip Mei and Li Cheng Uk Resettlement Estates to serve the large number of children there who attend neither school nor a roof top club.
52. Both the Girl Guides Association and the Boy Scouts Association concentrated their efforts on the encouragement and stimulation of scouting and guiding in areas not previously covered. Special mention must be made of the progress made in the development of scouting and guiding amongst handicap- ped children, and children in special homes such as Approved Schools, the Remand Home and Orphanages. There was also a big expansion of activities in the New Territories.
53. Morse House, the headquarters building of the Boy Scouts Association, was used to the fullest extent and proved to be only just adequate in size for its multifarious uses, such as as a meeting place for troops and packs, physical training, can- teen facilities, and sleeping accommodation for scout visitors.
54. The Girl Guides Association's two buildings, Sandilands Hut in Hong Kong and the Jockey Club Hut in Kowloon, were also very much in demand for a variety of guide activities.
55. The great need for hostel accommodation for young workmen was met in part by the establishment of a hostel by the Y.M.C.A. in the very crowded Shamshuipo district. This hostel can accommodate 400 residents.
56. Two Y.W.C.A. hostels housed nearly 100 factory girls, whilst the W. M. Thomson Memorial Hostel run by the Salvation Army, primarily for young apprentices, reached its maximum capacity of 56-but plans were in hand to provide accommoda- tion for a further 70.
57. Great efforts were made by the Children's Playground Association to increase the recreational facilities for children and young persons. The playing fields attached to the Associa- tion's two centres, the War Memorial Centre and the Queen Elizabeth II Youth Centre, and also Maple Street Playground, were all equipped with football and basketball pitches and were used to the full by school and non-school children in addition to a large number of young apprentices.
