contributed much in a short time, but rather their emphasis on setting an example by their own personal work. From the very

outset they have been successful in getting women from rich families to work not only for the poor, but with the poor. Instead of hiring instructors in their domestic classes such as cooking, sewing, home-economics, the prosperous and educated members undertake the work themselves. It was unprecedented in the history of Hong Kong, when the committee members of one of the Women's Welfare Clubs, after three months con- centrated rehearsal, appeared themselves in a charitable performance in aid of the construction of a day nursery, and the total proceeds obtained from the tickets sold was over $40,000. Had professional actors been engaged half of the proceeds would have to have been paid to them.

82. The membership of 2,233 in these three clubs includes women from all walks of life.

CHAPTER XV

OFFICIAL AND VOLUNTARY CO-ORDINATION

83. The close and harmonious relationship between official and voluntary welfare work which is a special feature of Hong Kong continued smoothly throughout the year. That it is something special and unusual is shown by the unsolicited remarks made in this connexion by many visitors to the Colony from overseas, from which the inference can be drawn that such friendship and trust between Government and the unofficial welfare bodies is far less developed in many other countries.

84. In fact, the staff of the Social Welfare Office has a deep personal interest in the work and problems of the religious and voluntary welfare organizations, which are probably more numerous and energetic in Hong Kong than anywhere else in the Far East.

85. To advise Government on matters connected with social welfare there is an officially appointed Social Welfare Advisory Committee, which was reorganized into its present form four
