63. Even more than in the Engineering Faculty, we feel that there are far too many full Professors in this Faculty.

than courses in Medicine or Engineering where a more standardized curriculum is followed to- wards a professional qualification, the Board of the Faculty of Arts has nevertheless taken great care to prevent undergraduates from following disconnected courses of partial study, and its long established arrangement of courses in Groups of Studies, each under its adviser, is specially effec- tive in this respect.

(b) The six members of the Faculty who at different times and for varying periods have occupied the post of Dean, are unanimous in declaring that they have never found the internal discipline of the Faculty defective, and are at a loss to understand on what grounds this serious charge is based, especially in view of the fact that the Deans have on more than one occasion been complimented by Sir William Hornell on the smoothness with which the business of the Faculty of Arts is conducted.

(c) It is the belief of the Faculty that consistency of policy has been achieved by the practice which entails upon cach of the senior members of the Faculty the periodic holding of the Deanship.

The Senate would point out that there are only four "full Professors whose services are exclusively devoted to the Faculty of Arts, and that they are called upon to cover a wider range of subjects than is usually required from the occupants of University chairs.

Resolutions of Council,

Resolved that unless the financial condition of the University has improved or unless there is a development of advanced work in these depart- ments, the Professorships of Chemistry, Physics and Mathematics, when they fall vacant, be suspended and that there be substituted for them
