HONG KONG.

REPORT ON THE WATER SUPPLY OF HONG KONG.

BY

MR. W. WOODWARD, B.SC., A.M.INST.C.E.

NECESSITY FOR REPORT

1. The large increase in consumption this summer and the difficulties encounter- ed in filtering and distributing water to the consumers necessitate an investigation of the Colony's supplies.

2. General. This report is a non-technical description of the existing water works and of the present deficiencies. It gives estimated requirements for the next five years, proposed extensions and recommends a programme of new works.

3. As the proposed new works have not been worked out in detail it is not possible to give estimates of cost but approximate figures could be prepared at short notice.

4. The words "Island" and "Mainland" have been used generally in con- nection with the supplies for the City and Hill District and for Kowloon.

5. A plan, Appendix I, giving general information of the existing Waterworks and of proposed new works is attached.

SOURCES OF SUPPLY

Island.

6. The Island's water supplies are obtained from three sources namely:- "Eastern", "Western" and "Mainland".

7. The catchment areas of the Tytam Valley comprise the "Eastern" Source and those of the Pokfulam and Aberdeen Valleys comprise the "Western" Source.

8. The small catchment areas at Wong Nei Chong Gap may be utilized to augment either of the Eastern or Western Sources.

9. The above resources being insufficient to meet the Island's requirements the deficiency is made up from the supplies from the Shing Mun Valley on the "Main- land".

10. Of the available resources of the Tytam Valley about 20% are primarily gravitational the remainder being converted to gravitational by means of pumps.

11. Approximately 50% of the resources of the Aberdeen Valley are pumped to make the whole of them gravitational.

12. The resources of the Pokfulam Valley and Wong Nei Chong Catchment Areas are wholly gravitational.

Mainland.

13. The water supplies of the Mainland are obtained from the Catchment Areas of the Kowloon Waterworks augmented by those of the Shing Mun Valley. They are wholly gravitational.
