Students obtaining less than 50% total marks may be sent back for further training. Students obtaining 50-75% are appointed as chargemen.
Students obtaining 75% or over are appointed to superior positions as these become available.
The standard of instruction in the Technical School is well up to the examination standard of such bodies as the Institution of Civil Engineers or of the Institution of Mechanical Engineers.
The specialised equipment used on the railways for signalling and other purposes is kept thoroughly up to date; but there is much room for improvement in the equip- ment of the Strength of Materials and Prime Movers Laboratories.
In addition to the Special Apprenticeship System the Railway has a very sound scheme of training trade apprentices, these being moved from one gang to another within the department in which they are apprenticed. The duration of apprentice- ship is five years. Attendance at evening courses at the Technical School is compul- sory for all apprentices, English being one of the main subjects taught.
The value placed on a good general education can be gathered from the rates of pay on which apprentices start. It will be observed that these are solely dependent on the educational standard of the apprentice.
