Road Improvement from Aberdeen to Shaukiwan.—(C.S.O. 4844/1912.)

The Chairman explained that the subject before the Committee was the construction of a length of about one mile of new road from a point on the existing Aberdeen-Deep Water Bay road about 1 miles east of Aberdeen to Deep Water Bay, via the Brick & Tile Works. The object of this road was to make it possible for Motor Cars or other wheeled vehicles to reach Deep Water Bay. This was at present impossible owing to the very steep gradient of the existing road. It would be impossible ever to have a motor road round the Island unless this section of it was constructed.

The estimated cost for a 16' wide road was $40,000 and for a 20′ road $48,000.

After full discussion, it was unanimously decided to recommend that:--

(a.) The construction of the road should be proceeded with at once on the trace

laid down.

(b.) It should be 20′ and not 16′ wide, the cost being estimated at $48,000.

(c.) It should be completed as early as possible, supplementary provision being

made in this year's Estimates when necessary.

The Committee then adjourned.

A. F. CHURCHILL,

Chairman,

Laid before the Legislative Council this 4th day of June, 1914.

M. J. BREEN,

Clerk of Councils.
