PATHOLOGICAL INVESTIGATIONS.

Small-pox.

As in past years, a slight epidemic of smallpox was prevalent during the early part of 1904. Twenty-eight cases of small-pox were examined in the Public Mortuary. Three cases

were received in January; nine in March; eleven in

April; three in May; one in June; and one in December.

The diagnosis is always made by corpse inspection. Little of any pathological significance is to be found by post-mortem examination. Almost all the cases examined were those of children under 10 years

of age.

Generally speaking the type of disease present was severe, most of the cases manifesting the haemorrhagic variety of the disorder.

The annual recurrence of epidemic sinall-pox will continue in Hongkong until China recognises the importance of affording provision of the means for gen- eral vaccination and re-vaccination.
