Q.-In which there were some cases of small-pox?
A. Yes, three cases of small-pox.
Q.-Were those cases confined to the troops or were any of them ordinary members of the ship's company?
A.-There was one military officer and two soldiers.
Q.-The Orontes came from England ?
A. Yes.
Q. Where did the disease first show itself?
A.-It broke out before the ship got to Colombo.
Q-Was that case landed when the ship reached Colombo ?
A. Yes; I believe so, but I may say that I am only speaking from hearsay. It has not been officially reported yet.
Q.-Was the ship detained at Colombo?
A.-I believe not.
Q.-She proceeded on to Singapore?
A. Yes.
Q.-There was no other case?
A.--No.
Q-Only one case between Egypt and Colombo?
A. Yes, no further outbreak until after Singapore.
Q.-Was she free at Singapore ?
A.--I imagine that she must have flown the quarantine flag at Singapore.
Q.-What occurred on the way up here?
A.-Three cases of small-pox occurred.
Q. And upon her arrival?
A.-These three cases were under treatment.
Q.-She had also some suspected cases had she not? How many?
A.-Eight. There were seven soldiers and one seaman.
Q. What was the number of troops on board?
A.-I have not got the exact strength, but approximately, I believe, there were nearly a thousand strong, that is, officers, non-commissioned officers and men.
NOTE by Dr. PATERSON.-In all there were 833 persons.
Q. What was done when the ship entered the harbour? A.-She flew the quarantine flag and was put into quarantine.
Q.-And they were kept there for how long?
A.-She came in on the sixth. The troops were landed and put into the quarantine camp in Kowloon, with the exception of the suspected cases which were placed upon Stone Cutters' Island.
Q. Are they all free now?
A.--I saw those on Stone Cutters' Island immediately after their arrival and I found no trace of small-pox among them. They have been under observation since, but I believe steps have been taken to have them released,
NOTE by Dr. PATERSON.-On my recommendation they were subsequently transferred to the quarantine camp.
