25.-GAOLS AND PRISONERS.
On the 1st January, 1889, there were 503 prisoners in Victoria Gaol; 3,705 were admitted during the year, and 3,608 discharged; the total number of prisoners on the 31st December, 1889, was 600, of whom 39 were Europeans.
The daily average of prisoners was 581, as against 531 in the previous year.
The number of prisoners admitted into Gaol during the last five years was as follows:-
