717. It is granite?

A.-No, it is granite dressed smooth.
By Dr. Cantlie.
719. Is there any practical difference between the sewers in the Western district and the sewers in the other parts of the city?
A. No; I don't think there is.
720.-There is in that sewer, as you pointed out on the plan just now, a trap which prevents gas ascending?
A.--Yes.
721. In the meantime there is no shaft. There is one built but not connected?
A
A. Yes.
722.-All the others have a shaft?
A. Yes; they are brought together in knots.
723. But they are all ventilated except this particular one? (pointing on plan)
A.-No; you are alluding to the wrong one. The one we have been speaking of is a different one. [Points it out on plan.]
724.-But in the meantime the one below Richmond Terrace is the only one that has not a shaft up the hill?
yet.
A. Yes.
725.—But there is a shaft being made, is there not?
A. Yes. There is a shaft above Mr. GOURDIN's house, but it is not connected
726.-When that is connected that will be on the same footing as the others to the
East?
·
J
A. Yes.
727.—And all will have a shaft up the hill?
A.-There are main sewers in the Eastern district which are not so ventilated.
728. But from the Clock Tower westward that is the only one?
A.-Except a main in D'Aguilar Strect.
729. But that is the main one?
A.—The idea, is to get these mains joined so that the highest shall terminate in a chimney.
730.—Is there any access to the sewers by which one can get into them?
A. Yes, those that are large enough.
731.-Where?
