6. Taking these circumstances, therefore, into consideration, the Council agreed with me in thinking that it would be highly desirable to sanction the issue of One Dollar Notes. I have, therefore, so notified the Corporation, and I understand that they have, by telegraph, ordered the notes through their Agent in London to be sent out without delay.
7. I trust that Your Lordship will be pleased to approve of my action in this
matter.

The Earl of Kimberley to Governor Sir A, E. Kennedy.
DOWNING STREET,
14th October, 1873.
SIR,
With reference to your despatch No. 46 of the 2nd of July, 1872, I transmit to you the enclosed copy of a letter from the Treasury for your information and guidance, and also for any observations you may desire to offer.
It is to be regretted that it was not sooner observed that the issue of notes for sums under the equivalent of one pound was contrary to the 327th Colonial Regu- lation; and I have to request that, unless you are advised that there is any legal difficulty, or that any serious public inconvenience would result, you will issue instructions for calling in the Dollar notes now in circulation, and prevent the issue of any further notes of less value that five dollars.
Governor Sir A. E. KENNEDY, K.C.M.G., C.B.,
&C.,
I have, &c.,
