NEWS SERVICE
With the arrival of Jagjit Dillon from Reuters, the opportunity was taken to re-organise the production of news and a News Service separate from the Chinese and English Radio Services was formed under his direction. The changes then instituted undoubtedly gave the news team great confidence. Coverage of local news was extended and a regular weekly news feature instituted which examined matters of interest to Hong Kong in the context of South East Asia, using voice reports from regional capitals. The result of all this had been that balanced news bulletins were provided quickly and accurately to the people of Hong Kong, and RHK News Service earned a reputation second to none. The Newsroom produced three main bulletins a day in English and there were hourly headlines or news summaries in both English and Chinese, which were expanded into full reports whenever there was a major news break. The News Section relied on its own team of reporters and the Government Information Services for local news and on news agencies for international material. Conscious of the need to keep people informed of the happenings in Hong Kong, special emphasis was placed on local news. The BBC World Service News was relayed each day by satellite much to the general approval of the majority of the English speaking
