Topical Events

12. This news magazine programme concentrates on outside inter- views. Its two daily editions cover a wide range of news items. The programme serves inter alia as a vehicle to explain new policies and legislation, and also reflects the opinions of people from all walks of life. 'Topical Events' maintains a 7-day-week production throughout the year. Rediffusion's sound service relays all editions, and so provides the programme with a wider audience. The team is on the alert day and night to give broadcast coverage of special events and major calamities such as the June rainstorm disaster, the gas explosion at the Daimaru Department Store and the Watson Estate fire which lasted for over thirty hours.

Public Affairs

13. Public Affairs programmes continue to reflect responsible, well- informed opinion on matters of public concern. An increasing part of the work of the Public Affairs Section has been live or recorded outside broadcasts. The major events of the year covered were the official opening of the cross-harbour tunnel and the British Industrial Exhibition by H.R.H. Princess Alexandra and the opening of the Kwai Chung Container Port by H.E. the Governor, Sir Murray MACLEHOSE. Other events including the Queen's Birthday Parade, the Cheung Chau Bun Festival and the Dragon Boat Festival were covered live. The Congregations of the two Universities were pre-recorded for later transmission.

14. Regular Public Affairs Programmes include 'Talking Point' in which leading members of the community and Government representa- tives from various Departments are invited for discussion on matters of public interest. There are also two in-depth fact-finding documentary programmes, 'Enquiry' and 'News Feature', and editorial opinions are summarized weekly in the programme 'What the Papers Say'. 'Who Cares' is a regular series of talks by Government Officers explaining the work of their departments. For the over one and a half million people concerned, there was the weekly programme 'Life in Resettle- ment Estates' dealing with the various problems met by people who live in the estates. 'People First', broadcast three times a week,
