volume of information which Government may wish to disseminate. Considerable care, therefore, is given to the planning of these pro- grammes and a weekly meeting of all producers concerned is held in order to discuss priorities and subjects.

EDUCATIONAL BROADCASTING

44. Hong Kong has no Schools Broadcasting Service, although the Education Department is in process of establishing an Educational Television Service which is expected to come into operation in 1970. The inability of children to listen to educational programmes in schools means that the work which Radio Hong Kong does in the educational field is of a general enrichment kind, rather than direct teaching.

45. The Chinese Service includes English language lessons for adults and children of primary school age, features on developments in science, Cantonese pronunciation lessons, and talks and discussions on Chinese literature among it's educational programmes, whilst the English Service broadcasts elementary and intermediate Cantonese lessons for expatriate listeners, programmes on English literature for children of secondary school age, periodic programmes on the develop- ment of western serious music, and French and German lessons.

MUSIC AND ENTERTAINMENT

46. One of the most important achievements of the Chinese Service during the year was the development of the Lung Cheung Drama Group. It is named after the road which skirts Broadcasting House and its translation, appropriately enough, means 'Dancing Dragon'. The members of the group consists of some 20 artists picked from the drama section of the department, plus 12 musicians from the Radio Hong Kong Orchestra.

47. In collaboration with the recreation section of the Urban Services Department the Lung Cheung Dramatic Troupe put on operatic shows regularly during the year at public parks and playgrounds of many resettlement estates. The shows were very well received and were usually attended by several thousand people. Apart from performing for the U.S.D. the troupe also gave five performances for the Chinese Manufacturers' Association 'Exhibition of Hong Kong Products' in December, and two demonstration shows at the Hong Kong University.
