RTHK Departmental Reports 香港電台年報 All

65. Request programmes, in which listeners write in to ask for a particular record to be played, continued to be very popular with young people both on the English and Chinese Services.

66. By far the largest and most ambitious of these is the annual Radio Hong Kong charity drive 'OPERATION SANTA CLAUS', in which both services unite to provide a three day marathon of requests in return for money pledged to the cause of providing Hong Kong's poor children with some extra comfort at Christmas. A total of over $200,000 was pledged during the two drives which occurred during the period covered by this report. During the disturbances of 1967 special request programmes were mounted in the Chinese Service for the benefit of Police, utility workers and emergency services. These programmes under the general title of 'FOR THOSE WHO SERVE US' included interviews with per- sons who had continued to work loyally throughout the troubles. A total of fifty programmes were broadcast in this series. Details can be found in Appendix 'I'.

ENGINEERING

GENERAL

67. The technical services of Radio Hong Kong are undertaken by Cable and Wireless Ltd. who are responsible for the maintenance, installation and operation of all studios, transmitting and receiving facilities. The Medium and Short Wave Transmitters were operated from a station at Hung Hom on the Kowloon Peninsula until 26th January, 1968, when a new station was completed at Golden Hill in the New Territories and took over the services. In the belief that improved coverage by the more powerful medium wave transmitters will adequately serve the needs of the fishing fleet no provision has, as yet, been made to retain the short wave broadcasts of the Chinese Service on 3940 KHz. However, the situation is being kept under review and further consideration will be given to this service if this proves necessary.

68. The VHF/FM Transmitting Station is located at Mount Gough on Hong Kong Island. The Receiving Station is part of the Cable and Wireless centre at Mount Butler, also on Hong Kong Island. The main studios are located in Mercury House while two emergency studios are situated in Beaconsfield House.

69. Studio facilities are made available to overseas news corre- spondents enabling them to send voicecasts, reports on news and features about Hong Kong and the Far East generally to their parent organiza- tions. These voicecasts are routed through Cable and Wireless via tele-
