EDUCATION
67. Two main series of direct language teaching were broadcast during the year. In response to many requests Radio Hong Kong followed up the success of the elementary series of Cantonese lessons by an Intermediate Course of 'Kwang Tung Wah'. The new series con- sisted of 117 lessons and once again a special booklet was prepared for use by those interested in furthering their studies of the main dialect spoken in Hong Kong. Undoubtedly a knowledge of Cantonese enhances the pleasure of living in Hong Kong. The elementary and intermediate series of Cantonese will continue to run alternatively and a third series for advanced students is now being contemplated.
68. 'Le Francais Chez Vous' is a popular series of radio lessons prepared by Radio Television Francais. These programmes are broad- cast in conjunction with booklets available from the Alliance Francaise and continued to appeal to people from many walks of life in Hong Kong.
69. A series of special interest, which was conceived and broadcast during the year, was 'Hong Kong in History'. The programmes did not set out to be a definitive history of Hong Kong in themselves but rather traced the story of the Colony from the Stone Age up to the end of the Japanese occupation at the close of the Second World War. The English dialogue in the programmes was spoken slowly so that students could follow the series without too much difficulty. A text book was prepared to accompany the 24 lessons containing many excellent line drawings and photographs of Hong Kong, reproductions of stamps, maps and places of interest throughout the area and follow up exercises. 'Hong Kong in History" is now being translated into Chinese and a similar series of broadcasts will take place accompanied by a Chinese version of the text book. It is intended that each series should be 'timeless' and will be repeated in the years ahead. Much interest has been shown in 'Hong Kong in History' and tapes of the broadcasts have been made available to schools for use by students not able to hear the pro- grammes. Sales of the English version of the text book have been most rewarding and the first print run of 5,000 was nearly exhausted at the first broadcast of the series.
