helped it was found that it was not entirely satisfactory because many of the writers were students, who could not listen during working hours.

48. Another important series of programmes was that prepared by members of the University of Hong Kong's Music Club. In this pro- gramme, which took place on Saturday mornings, members of the Club were able to select and present their own choice of music.

49. The weekly 'Record Review' continued to attract considerable attention. In this programme local critics played and talked about new classical music releases which arrived in the Colony. Over 150 records were discussed during the year. Another weekly programme was ‘Eastern Window', and during its 5-month run folk and traditional music from over a dozen Far Eastern countries was broadcast.

50. 'Music of the Western World', a series of 30 musical talks by David SHAPIRO, found special favour among the younger people. This series traced the development of music from the beginning of Chris- tianity up to the present time.

51. Whenever possible Radio Hong Kong broadcasts recitals of both local and international artists, either from the studios or from the City Hall Concert Hall. Among the international artists who appeared this year were the French clautist, Jean-Pierre RAMPAL; the British pianist, Dennis MATTHEWS; the American negro singer, Betty ALLEN; the Beaux Arts String Quartet; the Vienna Academy Chorus; the London Symphony Orchestra; the Polish born Mexican violinist, Henryk SZERYNG; and the Russian pianist Vladimir ASKENAZY.

52. There was also the successful series of concerts at the City Hall on Sunday afternoons, already referred to in paragraph 20 of this report. The English Service presentations were intended to stimulate an interest in Western music among the Chinese audience and a considerable number of local musicians took part in this enterprise. Among them were Barbara WALTER, Barbara FEI, Patti DUNCAN, John MCLEOD, Moya REA, Arrigo FOA, Kathleen DUNCAN, LEE Bing, Sheila LAI, Iris LAI, FUNG Hung, CHANG Wing-sou, Ely ALVES, LIU Yuen-sung, Charlotte DEHIO, LAM Hung-hee, Ho Li-lok, CHAN Ling-kwong, Mary AU, HUNG Wai-kwong, So Hau-leung, the Florence Der Singers and the Robin Boyle Singers.

53. Serious music continues to play an increasingly important part in the English Service broadcasts and the large amount of correspondence received from listeners seems to amply justify this policy.
