gramme was broadcast from Monday to Friday at 8.30 a.m. and repeated again in the evening.
43. On certain Friday evenings throughout the year Radio Hong Kong makes available time for broadcast appeals by charitable organiza- tions. In the past, it has been the practice to restrict appeals to those organizations who have been granted an official Flag Day. However, towards the end of the year, a more liberal policy was worked out whereby other organizations would be permitted the opportunity to broadcast appeals for funds provided that there were some occasion on which to base the appeal.
44. Most people like to take the opportunity now and again offering their personal views on the programmes they have heard. In order to satisfy this desire the English Service arranged a 'Listeners Letter Box', in which the listeners comments and criticisms about the programme were read out, very often with extracts from the actual programme; the appropriate producer then offered his answer or explanations on the points which had been raised.
45. "They Lived In Government House' was a series of talks by G. B. ENDACOTT about the previous Governors of Hong Kong. The talks included not only biographical details of the many famous men who have governed the Colony, but also much information about the development and growth of Hong Kong. The talks were subsequently reprinted in the Saturday edition of the China Mail, one of the Colony's leading newspapers.
SERIOUS MUSIC
46. Programmes of serious music in the English Service increased in both scope and frequency during the year. These programmes consisted of broadcasts of live or recorded recitals which took place in Hong Kong as well as the performance of orchestral works, etc. by means of gramo- phone records. Broadcasts of serious music were further supplemented by magazine and illustrated talks programmes.
47. Of the regular programmes presented by means of gramophone records perhaps the most popular series was 'Music by Request' which tended to concentrate on the better known works in the classical music repertoire. The number of letter received in connexion with this series was a mark of its popularity and an additional morning programme was introduced to try to clear the back log. Although this arrangement
