offset to a certain extent by the employment of outside contributors from whom many valuable programmes were obtained. Other programme duties were re-organized, but the small size of the permanent staff makes the maintenance of a 17-hour daily programme throughout the week a difficult problem.

NEWS PROGRAMMES

31. Bulletins of news in English are broadcast at 8 a.m., 1.15 p.m. and 6.00 p.m. and 8.00 p.m. and 10.00 p.m. (These times vary slightly between the winter and summer months.) The morning, lunchtime and early evening bulletins are locally compiled and the later night bulletins are relayed from the B.B.C's World Service (formerly the General Overseas Service).

32. Supplementary bulletins of news headlines are also available during the day, and the English Service also re-broadcasts the B.B.C's News Magazine 'Radio Newsreel' each evening.

33. The English Service's locally produced news magazine 'Topics' has had a particularly active year. During the period under review the programme was extended to a 20-minute daily programme which con- tained an average of 7 items. The producer has at his disposal a team of interviewers/reporters whom he briefs for each day's edition after con- sidering the basic framework at a morning meeting. Interviews, which may take place at the airport, in offices or hotels, aboard ship or in the street are usually obtained on portable recorders and subsequently edited for the final broadcast. The producer then correlates the various stories into a cohesive programme which is broadcast at the peak listening period between 7.10-7.30 p.m.

34. Whilst the English programme 'Topics' is as much concerned with local events and happenings as its Chinese equivalent 'Topical Events' it has the advantage of being able to use the ever increasing number of visitors to the Colony, who normally do not speak Cantonese.

35. Amongst those who were included in "Topics' in 1964-65 were the Australian cricketer, Richie Benaud; the former American Vice- President, Richard NIXON; Group Captain Cheshire, founder of the Cheshire Homes; the Dean of Canterbury, the Reverend HEWLETT- JOHNSON; the former Chancellor of the Exchequer, Reginald MAUDLING; the publisher of Time Magazine, Henry LUCE; the Deputy Prime Minister of Malaysia, Tun Abdul RAZAK; the Maharaja of Boroda; the author, J. B. PRIESTLY; and many personalities from the film, television and other branches of the entertainment world.
