13. Topical Events' also serves as a useful organ for the dissemina- tion of Government information and publicity. The various Medical and Health Department drives against cholera, polio and diphtheria, etc. are always given good coverage; other Government activities such as police recruitment, fire prevention advice and services to fishermen and farmers are also well publicized.
14. Local events such as typhoons, fires, exhibitions, the opening of housing projects, schools and clinics are fully covered by eye-witness reporters and interviews are obtained on the spot whenever this is possible.
15. "Topical Events' offers listeners a concise and factual account of the daily happenings in Hong Kong and its audience continued to increase during the past year.
TALKS AND MAGAZINE PROGRAMMES
15. Talks and Magazine programmes in the Chinese Service cover a large variety of subjects and needs. Into this category fall such items as the daily food price reports from the Central Market, which offer guidance to cooks and housewives on what foodstuffs are available and at what price; appeals for funds to assist local charitable organizations; film critics discussing the latest releases to be seen in the local cinemas; 'Fisherman's Half-hour', which contains a wealth of information of interest to local boat crews; children's and youth clubs' programmes, etc.
17. One new venture which began during the year and of particular interest to children was 'Famous Places of Hong Kong'. Although the magazine format was occasionally used the production was usually a straight forward talk about the many beauty spots and places of interest in Hong Kong. Instructions were given on how to get to the various venues and what to look for during the rambles. Locations varied from walks around Lamma Island and Sir Cecil's RIDE to the story of the Ling Wan Temple and Lei Cheng Uk Tomb. Publicity for the programme was arranged both through the press and by the Education Department, which assisted in the distribution of posters which were put up in many schools and drew students' attention to the broadcasts. A monthly competition was also organized in which participants had to answer questions about a particular location or perhaps submit a drawing of it; prizes were awarded to the first ten winners of each competition. About 500 entries were received on average for each of those competitions and the whole project proved most successful. The local press was of
