as operational and maintenance staff for the studio centre, the trans- mitting stations at Hung Hom (Medium and Shortwave Services) and Mount Gough (VHF/Frequency Modulation Services). The receiving station is at Mount Butler.

5. The Frequency Modulation transmitters were brought into opera- tion at the new Mount Gough station in 1960 and have given excellent service. The medium and shortwave transmitters at Hung Hom are now over twenty years old and are nearing the end of their economically useful life. Nevertheless, a high standard of maintenance had resulted in a very low breakdown rate. The station itself will have to be re-sited in connection with Town Planning requirements and studies were carried out during the year in order to select a new location and replacement transmitting equipment.

6. Both programme services continued to make steady progress throughout the year despite the very cramped working conditions in the studio centre. Greater emphasis was placed on education for both school students and adults.

7. Work on educational broadcasting included the establishment of two daily general educational programmes on the Chinese Service, the production of an intermediate series of Cantonese by Radio pro- grammes on the English Service, programmes on careers for pupils leaving school on both services and lectures on the Chinese Service broadcast in conjunction with the Extra-Mural Department of the Univer- sity of Hong Kong. The B.B.C. Chinese Service provided several valuable programme series dealing with scientific and economic subjects.

8. There was greater reflection of both world and local news during the year. The daily news magazines ‘Topics' (English) and 'Topical Events' (Chinese) expanded their coverage of Hong Kong events. The English Service introduced a weekly review of the Hong Kong press, both English and Chinese, daily market reports on food prices were introduced on both services, an increasing number of documentary programmes were produced, and a special daily programme of information for tourists was in preparation in the English Service. Increased co-operation between Radio Hong Kong and cultural organizations in the Colony resulted in a fuller expression through broadcasting of Hong Kong's achievements in the field of the arts.

9. Several members of the staff studied broadcasting overseas during the year. The Director attended the 5th Asian Broadcasters Conference in Seoul in September. The work of the Conference was mainly con-
