1963-64 was the year of the great water shortage. One feature pro- gramme about the situation was 'The Graph of Concern' which included contributions by E. P. WILMOT-MORGAN of the Water- works Office, G. J. BELL of the Royal Observatory and D. R. HOLMES of the Department of Commerce and Industry. D. S. WHITELEGGE explained some of the financial aspects involved and June TOMLINSON spoke about the difficulties of managing a home on a bare minimum of water.
Another English Service feature was 'Mother of 76' which told the story of how Mildred DIBDEN has run a home for many years for girls who have been abandoned. She has brought up her 'family' supported entirely by voluntary contributions.
