Requests for patients in hospital were invited for a special programme and the playing of selected music together with a short message does much, it is hoped, to speed recovery.
30. A new feature introduced during the year was 'Poetic and Musical Masterpieces'. The programmes in this series combined the life stories of some of the great Western poets such as BYRON, SHAKEspeare, Keats, WORDSWORTH, etc. with the more famous orchestral words of CHOPIN, BEETHOVEN, TCHAIKOVSKY and STRAUSS. The broadcasts took place on Mondays and Wednesdays and were repeated in the educational periods referred to above.
31. There were also frequent broadcasts of instrumental music through- out the year. One such programme dealt with the traditional music of various districts of China and well-known artists in Hong Kong were invited to broadcast examples of the many varieties available.
FEATURES AND DOCUMENTARY PROGRAMMES
32. There is a wealth of potential material for the production of feature and documentary programmes in the Chinese Service, and the only limitations that affect output are the availability of staff and facil- ities. Several notable programmes were produced during the year either as Chinese originations or as translations of English broadcasts. In the latter category fall such programmes as "The Years of Progress' con- cerning Hong Kong from 1958-1964; 'The New President', a documentary about Mr. Lyndon JOHNSON; and a series of science features 'Foundations of Modern Science'.
33. The production of Chinese features (i.e. those conceived in Chinese rather than translations of an English text) is not by any means difficult where the subject naturally lends itself; such subjects as 'Choi Hung Estate', one of the great re-housing schemes of Hong Kong, and "The New Chinese University' provide plenty of good material.
34. Local campaigns can usually be supported with a documentary programme on what has been achieved in the past and what is required of the individual; such campaigns during the year included cholera, anti-tuberculosis and (closely associated) anti-spitting, anti-litter, road safety and several others.
35. 'I Love Nature' is a semi-documentary programme, principally of interest to younger people. It is broadcast in dramatized form and introduces a lot of general information about plants and wild-life of Hong Kong and many other countries.
