Relay Reception

118. During the year a total of 2,070 English and 1,070 Chinese programmes were received from overseas broadcasting stations, either for direct relay or recording for subsequent rebroadcast. The receiving station is part of the Cable & Wireless installation at Mount Butler, and programmes are passed down telephone lines to the Central Control Room at Mercury House for incorporation into the service networks.

Recording

119. Recording of programmes has continued at a very high level and all studios at Mercury House have been in constant use.

121. Almost all recording is now done on magnetic tape, but discs continue to be cut for special purposes such as sound effects in drama productions and features.

122. Portable recorders are in continuous use and are booked out on an average of 140 occasions each month.

STAFF

123. Mr. D. E. BROOKS, Director of Broadcasting, returned to the Colony on 17th August, 1961 from vacation leave, and Mr. I. D. Kingsley, who had been Acting Director, resumed his post as Assistant Director. Mr. J. A. M. TINSON, Senior Executive Officer Class II who had been serving in the department as Secretary, went on vacation leave in late September and was replaced on 17th October, 1961 by Mr. S. C. PASCOE, Senior Executive Officer Class II.

124. Mrs. S. M. WILSON was appointed as an Announcer on 16th October, 1961, and in February, 1962 Mr. G. W. WEEKS took up his appointment as Programme Assistant, Class I, responsible for drama productions.
