Students' Favourites

64. Starting in December, recorded messages from students in Britain to their families in Hong Kong were supplied by Mr. Ronald BOXALL, the Principal Information Officer of the Hong Kong Government Office in London, to Radio Hong Kong. The messages were compiled into a 'Students' Favourites' programmes which was presented on the first Friday of the month.

65. Mr. K. P. CHENG left for the B.B.C. training course on May 4th and returned on September 6th.

66. Arrangements were in hand at the end of the year for the secondment of Mr. CHO Nai-pang, a Programme Assistant Class II, to the B.B.C. for a period of two years. In exchange the B.B.C. was to provide Radio Hong Kong with an experienced officer from their Chinese Section for the same period.

67. Miss Virginia YAN Wai-hing was appointed as a Programme Assistant, Class I on 1st September, 1961.

PART IV

ENGLISH PROGRAMME SERVICE

68. The English service is broadcast for 17 hours each day from 0700-2400 hrs. It can be heard on 860 Kc/s in the Medium Wave band, and on 91.0 Mc/s V.H.F./F.M.

69. Although a great many of the listeners to the service are Europeans, there are a very large number of Chinese who regularly tune to programmes in English and the service has to satisfy the needs of both groups whose interests may not always be identical. Whilst both can be expected to have the same requirements of, say, the news service (with the possible exception of cricket and soccer results), the expatriate listener often looks for programmes of a special and individual nature such as 'The Goon Show' and 'The Archers' which may not have the same appeal to the majority of Chinese listeners. On the other hand many Chinese listeners show a greater interest in programmes of an educational nature. It is these differing tastes which make programme planning in the English service more difficult and in the same time something of a challenge. Whilst it would be vain to assume that all is satisfactory, it does appear that in general the needs of both these
