16. The Chinese service is planned to offer a comprehensive range of programmes including news, talks, classical opera, modern music of East and West, sports and magazine programmes, drama, documentaries, etc. Particular attention is paid to specialized groups and programmes for fishermen, farmers, industrial workers and so on are regular features.
17. The service is broadcast on 640 Kc/s (Medium Wave Band), 3940 Kc/s (80 metre Band) and 94.0 Mc/s as part of Radio Hong Kong's VHF/FM service to the Colony. VHF/FM broadcasting is gradually gaining popularity in those areas in which medium wave broadcasts are poorly received and a special pamphlet is being prepared to draw attention to the advantages of the service.
Hong Kong Products Exhibition
18. An important date in the Chinese Service calendar is the annual Hong Kong Products Exhibition which takes place towards the end of the year. The 19th Exhibition lasted from 5th December, 1961-21st January, 1962. This year, for the first time, Radio Hong Kong con- structed a special studio and control cubicle on the site of the Exhibi- tion. The design incorporated as many glass windows as possible so that members of the public could see how programmes were produced and what was going on inside the studio and control room.
19. The lay-out of the studio was fully utilized to demonstrate actual broadcasting procedures of a cross-section of Radio Hong Kong's programmes. News broadcasts, vocal and instrumental recitals, inter- views, drama and record request programmes were all broadcast daily from the stand, and visitors to the Exhibition could see as well as hear broadcasts actually taking place.
20. Shortly after the Exhibition was opened a part of it caught fire, fortunately with no loss of life. Nevertheless, the valuable broadcasting equipment had to be dismantled and removed to safety in a matter of minutes. Once the Exhibition had been reopened to the public Radio Hong Kong was back in position and broadcasting from the site recom- menced.
Chinese New Year Round-up
21. On Chinese New Year Eve, 4th February, 1962, two mobile teams consisting of producers, engineers, singers, musicians and comperes were dispatched on a schedule of visits to seven selected outside broad- cast points on the island of Hong Kong. At each place a public variety concert was given, which was broadcast at the same time. Crowds were
