63. All the major sporting events which took place in the Colony were covered by Chinese Service commentators. This year was one in which many international football teams visited the Colony, and com- mentaries were broadcasts on matches between Hong Kong teams and visitors from Mexico, the Lebanon, Korea, Malaya, Costa Rica, Switzer- land and Brazil.

64. The Macau Grand Prix was made more interesting this year because, for the first time, live commentaries were fed straight into the transmissions. This was achieved with the kind co-operation of the Government of Macau. Special transmitters were used to link the com- mentators on the course with the studio centre at Mercury House.

Variety

65. 'Happy Farmers', a weekly programme in which a variety show tours New Territories villages, continued to be a high grade attraction. It proved so popular that a sister show 'Happy Fishermen' was intro- duced to cater for the floating population of the Colony. A series of six of these programmes were broadcast in the main fishing centres of the Colony. During these programmes, local fishermen and their families were encouraged to make their own contributions by telling anecdotes, by the playing of music or singing traditional songs.

66. Many of the Colony's best known singers sang in the series 'Cabaret on the Air', a well established weekly variety show.

67. 'Workers' Playtime' another touring programme, which visits workers in the factories, celebrated its sixth year of popularity.

News

68. Radio Hong Kong relayed daily news bulletins in Cantonese and Kuoyu from the B.B.C. There were also three daily bulletins of World and local news prepared by the Information Services Department which were broadcast in Cantonese and Kuoyu, and repeated in Swatow and Hakka. These news bulletins continued to be supplemented by a weekly half hour news actuality programme 'Topical Events'.

Women and Children

69. The listening needs of women and children were catered for by a wide range of programmes which were intended to appeal both in the way of entertainment and by stimulating a further desire for knowledge,

70. Natural history was the basis of many stories which were pro- duced for children. Popular quizzes on general knowledge subjects were
