difficulty caused by not knowing people's tastes, due to lack of listener research, made programme planning theoretical. Considerable use was still made of the BBC Transcription Service and perhaps the most out- standing introduction in this field was the daily serial which had won great popularity in England, 'The Archers'.

STAFF

77. Mr. T. A. BIRCH was promoted to Senior Programme Assistant on the expiry of Mr. T. D. BRINTON'S secondment from the BBC as Senior Programme Assistant; the vacancy thus left was filled by Mr. V. H. J. PRICE who has been seconded from the BBC for three years.

78. The staff of the Service was increased by one Programme Assistant and one Stenographer. Miss P. I. PENN was selected to fill the new post of Programme Assistant.

79. Miss Irene YUEN, Programme Assistant, attended a BBC Course after which she was attached to the Music Department of the BBC for one month.

80. Miss G. DURLING, Programme Assistant, resigned whilst on vacation leave in the United Kingdom.

PROGRAMMES

81. Her Majesty the Queen's Christmas broadcast was recorded this year, the recording being flown out to Radio Hong Kong and broadcast at 6.45 p.m. on Christmas Day, after the traditional Common- wealth Programme which this year was produced by the Australian Broadcasting Commission instead of the BBC. Wilfred THOMAS of the ABC spent several days in Hong Kong recording material on the Colony's refugee problem for the programme.

Serious Music

82. There is a very great demand for serious music among the Chinese public, which provides many of the listeners to the English service. This interest is met by encouraging local artists to reach a high enough standard of performance to broadcast, by a wide range of recorded programmes and by the engagement of international artists from overseas.

83. Local artists were featured each week in a recital from the Concert Hall, and international artists who broadcast for Radio Hong
