Assistants whose duties include programme compilation, writing and production. There are seven full time announcers, three Kuoyü and four Cantonese, and three part time, two of these being for Swatow and one for Hakka programmes.

The record library is in the charge of a librarian and at the end of the year contained some 7,000 records.

PROGRAMMES-INCREASE IN HOURS

11. A much greater variety of programmes was produced after the introduction of all-day broadcasting on May 26th.

All-day broadcasting was heralded on the evening of the 26th May by a variety show which was the forerunner of many new light entertain- ment programmes. Many of the Colony's leading film and opera stars took part; and the four-hour show included extracts from Cantonese and Peking opera, classical songs and instrumental music.

In the weeks that followed, over twenty new programmes took the air, giving Chinese broadcasting a new interest for listeners of all tastes.

MUSIC

12. There were fewer broadcasts of live opera performances from theatres this year, less than thirty being broadcast. The opera, however, still remains one of the most popular forms of radio entertainment, and a new series of afternoon programmes of Cantonese opera ‘Full Dress Drums and Cymbals' was largely based on the many long-playing recordings now available.

13. Well known opera stars and singers took part in two weekly live programmes of Cantonese music, 'The Singing Platform' on Sunday evenings, and 'Voice and String Harmonies' on Thursdays. In the latter programme there has been a return to the traditional forms of accom- paniment. In past years some Chinese instruments have given way to Western, the violin and saxophone in particular becoming prominent. The blend of these instruments has not been particularly successful, however, and in 'Voice and String Harmonies' the singers have been accompanied by the traditional Yee Woo, Sam Yin, Yang Tsin, Pipa, Yeh Woo, Pipe and Flute.

14. Blind artists Miss TSANG Yun Sum H, Miss YUM Kum Ha, and Mr. To Woon continued to broadcast song recitals which have an especial attraction for listeners of the older generation. 'The Eight Noted Songs', by Miss TSANG and Miss YUM, was a weekly
