104. Reports and observations made during the year indicated a further deterioration in medium wave reception conditions in Hong Kong. This deterioration is caused by interference from overseas stations and by electrical interference, and is particularly bad after dark outside the urban areas of Kowloon and Victoria.
STUDIOS
105. The reconstruction of the Concert Hall, the main drama and music studio, and the recording suite was completed. The drama studio reconstruction provided for the enlargement of the control cubicle and the installation of more elaborate disc reproduction facilities, and the construction of a new narrators studio adjacent to it. Associated with the drama studio control cubicle is an artificial echo circuit, the echo room being in the basement of the General Post Office. The facility has added greatly to the range of effects available to drama and feature programme productions.
106. Before its reconstruction, the recording suite consisted of one recording room and one studio. The space has now been used to give three recording rooms and one smaller studio, all sound-insulated and capable of independent operation. During reconstruction recording operations were temporarily carried out from a makeshift recording room in the Chinese Service production suite.
107. The arrival of eight Ampex tape reproducers and two console recorders made possible the decentralization of playback and record- ing facilities. Playback units were installed in both continuity and production control rooms, and recorders were placed in production control rooms, resulting in smoother operation and economy of staff. 108. There was a sharp increase in recording work following the introduction of new equipment as the following table shows:
