Many promising artists were 'discovered' during the course of the series and the winners took part in a series of eight variety shows broadcast in September.
31. Five bands took part in other programmes organized by amateurs and demonstrated the local talent for imitating the latest fashions in popular music, skiffle and calypso being well represented.
32. A very successful quiz programme series was the 'General Knowledge Quiz' held at the Government Adult Education and Recreation Centres. The series (sixteen heats, four semi-finals and one final) was organized in collaboration with the Education Department, and was recorded at one of the centres each week. Capacity audiences were drawn to these shows and rivalry between the centres was intense.
33. 'Workers Playtime', produced by Eddie Au Yeung, remains a firm favourite and has one of the largest audiences to any programme. Thirty-eight factories have now been visited by the show, which takes the road weekly with a band, artists and engineers to industrial establishments all over Hong Kong. The workers participate in the programme, taking part in a quiz or singing songs and telling stories. At one session the programme included the presentation of First Aid certificates to workers by the Hon. Kwok Chan; and every programme includes a quiz section with questions on industrial safety provided by the Labour Department. Eddie Au Yeung was also 'Down Your Way' in more than thirty cultural centres, educational organizations, welfare centres, factories and workshops during the year, bringing listeners to the microphone, interviewing them and playing their favourite music.
34. Moviegoers were taken behind the scenes of the Colony's film studios in a weekly programme 'Movie Magazine', in which Wyman Chan introduced many Kuoyü and Cantonese film stars, and producers. By arrangement with the film companies, the sound tracks. of fifteen Cantonese musicals were broadcast during the year, and, in 'Going to the Pictures', new films were discussed and criticized.
RURAL BROADCASTING
35. After discussion with the Director of Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry, a regular series of programmes for farmers was planned and started in May, and proved very popular with both country and city dwellers. The aim of the programme was to make available to farmers advice on farming problems, to stimulate discussion on farming methods
