local time. The broadcasts by the Rt. Hon. Sir Anthony Eden and the Rt. Hon. Hugh Gaitskell were relayed. Relays of the B.B.C.'s programmes in Chinese, which were devoted to the crisis, were increased, and the entire B.B.C. Chinese transmis- sion of forty-five minutes was relayed daily from 2nd November to 16th December.

With the subsidence of the crisis, schedules returned to normal, with the exception that the 9 p.m. English bulletin was retained as a permanent feature.

Public services.

34. Daily weather reports from the Royal Observatory were broadcast, consisting of the general situation for shipping and the local forecast. Storm and typhoon warnings were also broadcast as issued.

Special announcements issued by the Public Relations Office and by other Government departments were broadcast by both services.

Time was alloted to the organizers of charities for appeals for their flag days.

Public attention was drawn to events of interest in the Daily Diary broadcast by both services.

Time was given to candidates for the Urban Council election to present their platforms to the public.

General.

PART IV - CHINESE PROGRAMMES

35. The Chinese service under the direction of the Senior Programme Assistant, was staffed by seven programme assist- ants, five announcers, a record librarian and three clerks at the end of the year. The crowded office conditions which prevailed in previous years, and which had become very marked with the addition of new staff, were relieved in March 1957 by the occupation of offices on the 8th floor of Mercury House.

Hours of broadcasting.

36. Until November 4th, average weekly hours of broad- casting in Chinese were 654. On November 4th, the average rose to 74.
