and Peter Pears who made a special recording of "The Foggy Foggy Dew" to be presented to the first person who would pledge $1,000 for it; the offer was soon taken up by a local firm.
A highlight of the programme was the offer by several of the disc jockeys to jump in the harbour for a pledge of $1,000. This figure was reached on the third and last evening, and at 10 p.m. one of them gallantly took the plunge before a battery of press and newsreel cameras. A running commentary on his 'ducking for dollars' was broadcast in the programme.
70. "Radio Crossword" In this series of ten programmes, listeners were given various 'clues', usually in the form of music or sound effects and invited to fill in the right answers on a special cross-word puzzle blank published in the radio columns of the daily press.
Broadcast Drama
71. Radio drama in all its forms, ranging from the science fiction serial to adaptations of Greek tragedy continues to be one of the most popular forms of entertainment the medium has to offer. The English Service of Radio Hong Kong relies to a great extent upon the recorded plays supplied by the B.B.C. Transcription Service. These are first broadcast on the Home, Light and Third Programmes of the B.B.C. and set a very high standard of production and performance, whether the play be an escapist serial like "Journey Into Space" or an adaptation of "Troilus and Cressida".
72. The B.B.C. are not however able to supply sufficient plays to satisfy the full demand for radio drama. In particular there is a dearth of hour-length plays for inclusion in the weekly Radio Theatre series. Nor has the English Service of Radio Hong Kong sufficient staff to undertake more than an occasional production. It has therefore been the policy for some years to invite the leading amateur drama groups to undertake a number of productions each year, making themselves responsible for the provision of producers and actors, while Radio Hong Kong provides the necessary radio scripts and exercises a general supervision.
