be devoted entirely to topical items of more direct news value; so in January 1956 a weekly "News Magazine" was introduced. In the first three months of running this series had already brought listeners some 50 actuality reports, commentaries and interviews reflecting the contemporary scene. Early pro- grammes included such varied fare as an interview with the lightweight boxing champion of Hong Kong, a commentary on the revue "Holiday on Ice", a report on the foundation of the new Technical College, a visit to a flower arrangement exhibition, and news of Government's loan of $10,000,000 to fishermen.
34. A new series of magazine programmes designed to have special appeal for the housewife was launched in September 1955. Experts in the feminine pursuits of cooking, child nursing, dress making, flower arrangement, beauty culture and interior decoration contributed to the programme. Talks on domestic science and family problems were arranged with the co-operation of the Eastern District Branch of the Women's Welfare Club.
35. "Save Life!" was a feature on the public service being provided by the beach guards of the Urban Services Department. "Order of Merit" was a series of dramatized biographies of the great figures who have in the past been honoured with this award; the programmes were scripted by the British Council. Two series of talks, "British Customs" and "Students in Britain" were also sponsored by the Council. “The Flying Angel" marked the centenary of the Missions to Seaman and in addition to locally made recordings included an interview with Peter Kao, a young Chinese mission worker in the Port of London.
The Island of Hay Ling Chau, the Colony's leper hospital was visited with recording equipment, and actuality material was gathered for a feature to be called "The Island of Happy Healing”.
36. The weekly series of talks sponsored by the Education Department dealt with the ascent of Mount Everest, Hong Kong Industries, the Royal Tour to Nigeria and the British film industry.
