Reference Library
19. The departmental reference library was considerably expanded during the year. Works of musical, historical, theatrical, literary and general reference were added, and although most of these books are in English, they proved invaluable to the staff of both the Chinese and English pro- gramme sections in the building of programmes.

PART III - CHINESE PROGRAMMES
20. The establishment of the Chinese programme section remained unchanged this year. The Senior Programme Assistant had working under him four Programme Assistants, four Announcers, one Record Librarian and one clerk.
21. An average of 65 hours were broadcast weekly in Chinese languages, made up of 63.96% Cantonese, 28.13% Kuoyu and 7.91% Swatow. Normal hours of broadcasting were,

The Chinese programmes were carried by medium wave throughout the year, and on 1st June, 1955 the short wave transmitter was allotted solely to the Chinese Service, so as to improve reception in outlying parts of the Colony, where the listener demand is mainly for that language.
22. The Chinese Service now began to reap the full benefit of the staff increases made in 1954. The fuller experience of these new programme assistants was constantly being reflected in improved techniques and presentation and a fuller and more varied diet of programmes.
Cantonese Opera Relays
23. In December 1955 an agreement was reached with the management of one local theatre which resulted in the resump- tion of relays of Cantonese Opera on a limited scale. Such
