Compared with last year's total this shows an overall decrease of 15% due to the cessation, since July 1954, of programmes from Chinese theatres; English programme O.B.'s have increased by 14% however. There was also a consider- able increase in the collection of outside interviews by means of portable tape-recorders especially for the Chinese pro- gramme. This work does not involve engineering in the field and is not included in the above figures.

18. The permanent network of lines to 24 points around the Colony were used for most of these broadcasts, additional "special event" lines were also provided by the Hong Kong Telephone Company on 8 occasions.

19. A commentary from Lai Duen Po in a Marine Depart- ment launch following the competitors in the Cross-Harbour Swimming Race was transmitted to Electra House by V.H.F. link with equipment loaned by the Cable & Wireless "Harborfone Service" in September. Perhaps the most technically complex job was coverage of the unveiling ceremony at the Sai Wan War Cemetery in February. Using portable power, four mixer/ amplifier units were used to control 8 microphones for the two language programmes and the public address equipment on site. Royal Signals provided the high-quality programme circuits back to the Studios. Recordings from this O.B. were re-broadcast by the B.B.C. later in the day.
