Road widening. 204 cottages in the Tung Tau Cottage Area were scheduled for clearance to make way for the Tung Tau Road widening and Government Low Cost Housing scheme.
PRIMARY EDUCATION AND WELFARE
72. The cottage areas contain many schools and welfare facilities, which pay a nominal fee of $2.50 a quarter for their sites. The activities of the various bodies working in the Ngau Tau Kok cottage area are typical of those to be found elsewhere. Built mainly between 1952 and 1956 in what was then a rural area, this is one of the larger cottage areas. Its present authorized population of 7,238 consists of 1,290 families, who live in 1,201 individual structures. The principal social and educational work is in the hands of the Maryknoll Mission. The Mission runs a primary school which, by holding separate morning and afternoon sessions, has a total of 1,780 places; and a clinic, a handicraft training centre and a welfare centre with a children's library.
73. Although Ngau Tau Kok is particularly well-served, there are many denominational and secular educational and welfare activities in other areas. At the time of writing this report, the 15 cottage areas had between them 15 schools with primary places for 12,924 pupils, 21 small welfare centres, 10 clinics, 5 boys' and girls' clubs and 9 kaifong welfare associations.
74. During the year under review a recreation ground in Rennie's Mill Village Cottage Area was constructed to provide recreational facilities for the youth. A street lighting scheme was also being intro- duced in the area. This scheme is to be carried out in three stages and the first stage, which provides a total of 48 street lights, was completed in late 1970. The two remaining stages will be carried out in 1971-72 and 1972-73. A street lighting extension was carried out in sections 9 and 10 of Ngau Tau Kok Cottage Area where a total of 13 street lights were installed in August 1970. The whole of this cottage area is now provided with street lighting.
